For sport
riders looking for power, the Polaris 500 engine is a high-output
4-valve, 4-stroke, liquid-cooled powerplant that generates
incredible power. It uses a 40mm Mikuni carburetor, dry sump
lubrication, and a CD ignition.
The power is managed by the
automatic PVT (Polaris Variable Transmission). This dual-sensing
transmission responds to both engine RPM and vehicle torque load.
There’s no shifting required, just consistent power delivered
automatically to the wheels.
All power delivered to the rear wheels
is used with great efficiency, thanks to the Polaris Concentric
Drive System (CDS), which aligns the swing arm’s pivot point
with the center of the drive sprocket. The long-travel rear
suspension’s performance is not affected by engine torque,
and a consistent chain tension is maintained, reducing chain wear
and decreasing considerably the need for chain adjustment or
maintenance.
Using a Fox Shox with a remote reservoir, the rear
suspension travel is 10.5 inches, almost 2 inches greater than the
previous year’s model. Complementing the rear suspension, is
the long- travel, independent MacPherson strut front suspension. It
has 8.2 inches of travel and gives the Scrambler 500 a turning
radius of 60 inches.
When conditions call for 4-wheel traction, a
Scrambler 500 rider can activate the Polaris intelligent On-Demand
true 4-wheel drive system. It senses when the rear wheels lose
traction, then automatically engages both front wheels with full
torque. The handy on/off switch is located by the right handgrip.
Consistent braking is provided by the single-lever, all-wheel
hydraulic disc brakes and hydraulic rear foot brake, and E-Z Shift
lets a rider choose between forward and reverse. Twin
handlebar-mounted, dual-beam (high/low) quartz halogen headlights
offer great lighting.
The Scrambler 500 has a color-and-graphic
scheme that features red body panels and a black seat, and the fuel
capacity is 3.5 gallons.
