In the previous article, we were preparing to split the cases and get into the guts of the engine. Once the cases are split, there are many little thrust washers and snap rings that can go un-noticed, so use caution as you disassemble the engine.

Shortly after the 2004 Terrible Towns 250, Team Guilty had the opportunity to acquire a big bore 330 for our 250R. The stock 250R was a bit short in the horsepower department compared to the new 4-strokes we were racing against.

Many Z400 owners have found that one of the first things to go has been the stock axle. The axle has been noted to be soft and fragile. Suzuki did update this in later Z400 models but the stock axle is just not going to cut it for the type of use that our project Quadsport Z400 will experience. To solve this problem we ordered a Dura Blue Eliminator X-33.

We still had the orginal clutch in our 2000 Honda 400EX but it was starting to slip and we knew we would need something heavy duty to handle the new Tudor's Performance 440kit. Under hard use stock clutch baskets commonly break. We went to Hinson Racing for their complete package.

When inspecting the rear swingarm on our Project Z400 for the new
DuraBlue axle, we discovered that one of our rear axle bearings was
no longer rolling as smooth as it should. (Anytime you replace the
axle, it's a good time to check your axle bearings.)

We broke our Raptor's stock reverse lever switch several months ago where the small plastic mounting bracket holds it to the frame. We had been making do, since we found out that the assembly was $56 from Yamaha. It was never terribly convenient and was worse now that the bracket was broken. We had a hard time justifying that much money for a little piece of plastic - then we spotted the new DR. D handlebar-mounted reverse lever. Former Team Yamaha rider Doug Dubach at Dubach Racing Development has designed the solution to our problem. The new reverse lever mounts on your handlebars for quick access. It replaces the mounting bracket on the front brake master cylinder and gives you thumb access to reverse.

If you have been following project Raptor you know that we have built it with the intention of desert racing. The desert and desert races are a brutal environment. We wanted a chain and sprockets that we do NOT have to worry about.

With the performance upgrades in place Project Raptor is putting plenty of power to the ground. In fact so much that our stock clutch could not handle it. During our first real test, the SNARE Night Race, we started hearing loud screeching noises coming from Project Raptor. While we were not sure where the noise was coming from at first, we soon narrowed it down to the clutch. The clutch held up well enough to get us through the race but it needed to be replaced soon.
