We still had the orginal clutch in our 2000 Honda 400EX but it was starting to slip and we knew we would need something heavy duty to handle the new Tudor's Performance 440kit. Under hard use stock clutch baskets commonly break. We went to Hinson Racing for their complete package. Hinson components have been proven over and again. We aquired the Removeable clutch cover with Red billet cover, the billet inner hub and 8 plate pressure plate kit, and billet clutch basket. To go with these you will need to get new plates from Honda. These are NOT Honda 400EX plates. You will need fiber plates #22201-MAL-600 or 22201-KAE-000 and steel plates 22321-KFO-770 or Hinson H103 CR125 Akadized aluminum clutch plates.

Installation

First you need to remove your stock cover from the bike. Start by draining the oil then disconnect the oil lines and remove the oil filter. You may need to use a large scewdriver on the back tab of the cover to break it loose. With the cover off you can remove the bolts and springs from the pressure plate then remove the pressure plate and actuator. Leave the fiber plates installed until after you have removed the main shaft nut with an air impact gun. With the nut removed you can remove the fibre plates, steel plates, the inner hub, and then the stock basket.

Now you need to prep your new Hinson basket for installation. You will need to remove the gear from your stock basket. Do this by grinding off the rivets on the back of the basket. Be careful not to damage the retainer plate as it , the dampening springs, and the two washers will be reused.

Now install the stock dampening springs into the Hinson basket then the stock washers. the primary gear goes on next. Make sure it fits snug against the Hinson basket. The stock replainer plate goes on last before installing the screws. it is very important that these screws are installed to stay. You should prepare the threads by cleaning them with contact cleaner and then Locktite primer. finally install the srews with plenty of Red Locktite and torque them to 11 ft lbs. Hinson reccomends that you also ping the screws where they come through the inside of the basket to ensure they do not come loose. You are now ready for re-installation.

You can see that our stock plates were in pretty sorry shape.
