One thing that I went without for a while in my racing career was a steering stabilizer.

Tie-Rods are a pretty easy and often overlooked modification. But
they are a very important mod for serious riders. The small stock
tie rods and tie rod ends supplied by Yamaha aren't very strong. It
does not take very long for anyone riding hard to bend or brake
one. Along with needing a stronger tie rod and end, we needed some
longer tie rods to go with our new Epic front end.

With our new Roll Design Steering stem in place, we found that our stock bend handlebars did not match up well. We were able to get them bolted on with quite a bit of cable rerouting and the cables at their limit. But they just did NOT work. They were not comfortable at that height. We turned to Tag metals for some help. We picked out some new Tag T2 handlebars with the CR high bend anodized blue.

Project Raptor had managed to survive more than a year of constant abuse with the stock steering stem but a high speed crash in the Las Vegas 200 was the last straw for the stock steering stem.

If you have been following Project 400EX, or read last month's article on installing the IMS desert tank, you will recall that we ran into a problem with the Acerbis rally guards hitting our new IMS desert tank. While we have been lucky that we have not bent the OEM steering stem, we were ready to go to a new stem with built-in vibration resistant mounts.

In our continuous quest to make Project Raptor a true desert racing machine and prep it for the Las Vegas 200, we had to do something with a couple problem areas. We had damaged the right foot peg at one of the Whiplash races. Also, the stock brake lever had sustained minor damage since it hangs down under the peg. On the left side, the shift linkage was getting very sloppy mostly due to the complicated linkage type design that Yamaha put on the Raptor. We decided to take care of all three of these problems at one time.

It may seem that footpegs are just a basic item. How could a
"footpeg" be improved upon? Well, if anybody could do it, it would
be Doug Roll. Ever since we first saw a set of these pegs, we knew
we had to have them for our Project 400EX.

Who is HyperPro? HyperPro is a manufacturer of Racing Suspension Technology that is distributed by Micron North America. The primary product line of Dampers, Shocks, and Springs is orientated toward and mostly sold to the sport bike crowd. We were intrigued by their new Active Control Damper for the Yamaha Raptor.
