If you are thinking about
competing in almost any ATV race series, you will find that one of
the first requirements is a tether-type kill switch. Since we have
now taken our Project 400EX into the amateur ATV race
world, we decided upon a Pro Design ATV kill switch. There are a
couple other manufacturers, but Pro Design is arguably
the leader in this area. A quick call to
Rocky Mountain ATV
and we had one
on the way.
Follow along as we perform the
install:
Find a spot on the handlebars so that the two wires
can run down along the steering stem.
Make sure the tether cable will run cleanly from the
switch to the rider.
Remove the front fenders from the ATV.
There are two bolts under each fender.
One more screw on each side.
Remove the gas tank cover and your front fenders are
loose.
Locate the ignition control module under the right
fender.
With the module loose, locate a black wire with
a yellow stripe, going into the module.
The long wire from the Pro Design kill switch
attaches to the black/yellow wire.
Ground the short wire from the kill switch; we
attached it to the frame under the fender mounting
bracket.
Re-attach the module, tie the wires to the chassis,
and re-install the front fenders.
With everything back together, we tested the new
switch by pulling the clip loose from the switch.
Attach the tther to the rider and you are ready to
ride.
We have not did a live test and hope we don't too
soon!
