Most people would jump on a utility quad and be glad for how much fender there is to stop the mud and everything else from coming back at you. But there are still a few hard-core riders out there that want even more fender. To satisfy riders, Bombardier Custom Accessories created Mud Guard Extension Kits and Fender Protectors. The Mud Guards will help to keep that little bit more mud off that normally gets past the fenders. The Protectors are great for those of you who ride in tight woods trails and may be likely to have a tree or branch or something try and to ruin your new fenders. We strapped them on to our Outlander Max model.
According to the instructions, it should take you close to an hour to install both of these products. It ended up taking us at least a couple of hours. If the instructions were a little more thorough that would have helped keep the time down. It took so long because we did things multiple times - one of those "get it wrong and realize it when you see it." Once you do figure it out, the second side goes very smoothly. The Mudguards require drilling eight holes in your front plastic and 14 in your rear. You don't see these holes with the guards on, but they won't be too pretty with the guards off, so at that point you're committed. The Protectors however, didn't require any permanent changes to the quad - you just bolt them to the existing rear foot pegs of the Outlander Max.
In a few short weeks, we have had a few chances to test them out - good sticky, gravelly mud, and scraping through some trees. Surprisingly, they work! They are so narrow that you get the initial impression "Come on, if it blocks only another inch of mud, is it worth it?" We were very surprised at how much mud was caked up underneath the guards - mud that would have otherwise been all over our gear or us. And the best testament to the guards, is the fenders that do NOT show any new scratches from trees or brush. Pretty cool idea Bombardier! You made one of the best quads even better.
