Too much heat can be your enemy. We are using Project LTZ450 to compete in the Best in the Desert series where it is not uncomon to find tempatures above 100 degrees. Add to that the fact that they are all long distance races and you can understand whey we needed to make sure our LTZ450 would stay cool. That siad not only does and aluminum oil tank perform a function but the aluminum oil tank also looks COOL.

Nearly a year ago, we upgraded the front suspension on our Project LTZ with long travel a-arms. At the same time, we added a complete set of TCS shocks. In the front we used the TCS 19" Sag Control Series shocks. In the rear we sent TCS our stock LT-Z shock so it could be re-worked to match the front suspension.

In May you read about the Twin Air Intake kit we installed. We were happy with the Twin Air system but wanted MORE air for our new Tudor's Performance Z450. We had heard about people using a 400EX intake tube and so started doing some research.

We are long overdue for a Project update, especially since we have
been throwing a lot of dirt around with our Project LTZ400. This
project has been tremendously successful to date and we are very
pleased - yes, even with the availability of the newer competition
machines, the YFZ450 and TRX450R.

We were preparing Project Z400 for it's next desert race. We were expecting significant silt and wanted to make sure we had a good air filter and one that would be easy to replace during a pit stop. Twin air has recently released their line of ATV Powerflow kits which use a new cage system that seals to the air box to eliminate leaks and can still be removed easily. We do NOT want dirt in our motor as reliability is extremely important for long desert races. The dual stage filters are designed with a course outer layer with an open pore to catch airborn dirt and sand. Then the fused inner foam layer is fine and is designed to trap very small particles while still allowing maximum air flow. We ordered the Suzuki/ KFX 400 Power Flow Kit and..

Most of the handguards sold out there are for Motorcycle use only. Many can be made to fit on the ATV but require minor modification to fit around the controls which are of a different size on the ATV. PowerMadd to the rescue. They developed a system such that their Star Sieres Handguard can fit on any motorcycle, ATV , or snowmobile. The Handguards and mounting kit or sold separately. The handguards are universal, just pick your color. The mounting kit comes in three versions, motorcycles use 14251, all brands of ATVs use 14252, all brands of snowmobiles use 14250. The fully adjustable mounting system consists of aluminum brackets, hardened steel straps and stainless steel hardware. The motorcycle and ATV kit are actually the same but..

When we first saw the "bull horn" bumper from Pro Armor, we knew we had to have one. We must not have been the only ones, as I see them showing up now all over the ATV race circuit. Evidently you don't have to live in Texas to sport the bull horns! While we mostly had to have it just for the look, it is also very functional. The horns provide a nice place to grab the front of the ATV and lift it when you need to move it around.

The Z400 frame has excellent geometry for the ATV racer but notoriously has a serious problem with strength. The typical recreational rider will probably never see this problem, however if you race your LTZ or subject it to severe use such as jumping, you will quickly find there are a number of weak points in the frame. Inspecting Project Z400 after the BITD Parker 250, we could see that the frame was starting to stress-crack near the upper shock mounts on the front suspension.
