The Terrible's Town 250 just keeps getting faster year after year! Clocked at 4 hours, 55 minutes and 55 seconds, Q2 Doug Eichner and Marc Spaeth crossed the finish line on a Honda 450R for an easy Pro Quad win. Comparing times to past Terrible's races, it makes you wonder what's going on! Is the course getting shorter, or are the quads getting faster? Check out the time comparison of past Pro Quad winners below: 2004 : 5:02:36 2003 : 5:33:27 2002 : 5:58:42
Another Alba team, Q4 Steve Beilman and Clark Evernham , were just six minutes behind Matlock, securing 3rd place. Beilman had to be happy with that, since he hasn't had a top three finish at Terrible's Town since 2001.
Good Samaritan, Q14 Lynn Prosser , stopped to help an injured fellow Pro rider, Q22 Cyle Chislock , who suffered from a concussion from crashing in an unmarked washout section between pit 3 and 4. Countless other quads and motorcycles were all said to have crashed in the same section as Chislock. His partner, Josh Frederick , had to ironman the rest of the race and finished in 8th place. Note : This was a rare occurrence for BITD, since they pride themselves in clearly marking the dangers on their race courses. No official word yet on what happened. Some of the racers who participated in the Pre-Run said they didn't remember the washouts being there. Most likely they developed after the heavy rain just days before the race. Q33 Greg Row and Tony Baker were down for a while after Baker's crash in the same washout section, having to replace their mangled front suspension. The team borrowed a stock setup from a random spare Bombardier and finished the race in 14th. Even with a long pit stop to replace the battery in their YFZ, Q5 Shaun Moore and Nic Granlund rode hard to make up time, finishing in 5:15:43 , which put them in 5th place.
First Place Expert Quad, Q80 Mike Powada, Todd Hunter and Mark Bunderson , made a straight shot to the finish line. This team had a huge 15 minute lead over second place on their Honda 450R, which got some TLC after the subframe was severed at Parker. Hunter told us his quad ran awesome for this race, with zero problems.
Q46 Ed Teixeira and Jason Sparks finished 5th place on their custom KTM. Sparks dislocated his left shoulder just six days before the race, but still rode a few sections to give Teixeira a break during the 250 mile race. Between Pit 1 and Pit 2, Teixeira realized they had no rear breaks, which made for some great "endo" stories later in the evening. The unofficial Class Points Summary puts Q71 in the Sportsman Class lead by 3 points after the first two races in the series. Q46, Q80 and Q55 Brett Callen and Daniel King are in a three way tie for 2nd. This is going to be one exciting season for these teams! The very young Q97 Amateur team of Gareth Dihel and Kyle Pethers were very excited to finish in 1st place. This is their first year racing a BITD desert series. Among the 13 quad DNF's: Expert Parker 250 winner Q79 Matt Black, Mike Black and Kevin Clark had motor problems just 200 yards off the start line, which did them in for the day. The "Terrible's curse" continues for Q44 Scott Mitchell and Jeff McBride . Their Raptor tranny went out after just 30 miles into the race. Scott told me that if you add up all the miles he HAS completed here in Pahrump in the past four years, he STILL hasn't finished this race yet! Another young Amateur team, Q63 Corey Trejo, Jesse Canepa and Cody Mitchell (The youngest quad rider at Terrible's this year at the age of 13), had a sweet 1st place lead in their class all day until just after Pit 8. The team DNF'ed when the chain broke off of their Yamaha (which is still MIA in the desert!) about 30 miles before the finish line. The next race in the BITD Silver State Series is the one-of-a-kind McMillin Nevada 1000. Keep checking back for more info on this awesome 4 day race scheduled for July 6 - 10, 2005 . It's going to be an awesome adventure! - Tina Pedersen
