Project LTZ450 LTZ Air Intake UpgradeMore Air from Pingry and Twin Air

In May you read about the Twin Air Intake kit we installed. We were happy with the Twin Air system but wanted MORE air for our new Tudor's Performance Z450. We had heard about people using a 400EX intake tube and so started doing some research. The 400EX intake tube is significantly larger than the stock Z400 intake tube and allows a much larger air filter. The diameter of the air filter is more than an inch LARGER. We found that Pingry Racing Design makes two versions of their aluminum air box for the Z400. One that uses the standard Z400 intake and air filter, and one that uses a 400EX intake tube and 400EX air filter. So with all of this in mind we ordered:
  • Pingry Design Z400 Aluminum Airbox with 400EX mod
  • Stock Honda 400EX intake Tube via Ebay
  • Twin Air Power Intake Kit for 400EX and two additional air filters.
Installation With all of our parts in hand the first thing we needed to do was install the Twin Air adaptor insdie our new Pingry airbox. We used the adaptor to make a template on a piece of paper. We cut the center out then placed in on the airbox and drilled the three holes for the intake adaptor. Next we bolted the intake adaptor into place inside the Pingry airbox.
We made a template with a piece of paper then drilled the holes though the Pingry Box.
This is the Twin Air adaptor bolted in place in the Pingry airbox.
Next was bolting the aluminum airbox in place. Our The Pingry box has one hole on the right side of the box where it mounts to the frame and two on the left side, one a frame mount, and the second is for the CDI module. This was simple but we did have to locate some hardware fof the install. On the right side we needed some washers in between teh frame and the airbox and a longer bolt with a nut. On the left side we used the stock bolts but needed some nuts and locktight on the inside of the airbox.

New 400EX intake tube aquired on EBAY.

Trimming the air intake tube where it used to fit inisde the 400EX airbox.
The 400EX intake tube needed to be shortened some on both ends to fit between the Edelbrock cartb and Pingry airbox.
With the airbox bolted in place we proceeded to fit the new intake tube. The intake tube needed some trimming for the application and we also had to shorten it on both ends to fit between the airbox and Edelbrock carb. Take your time and make sure not to trim it too short. Some adjustments are made by tilting the airbox up or down to make it all line up correctly.
400EX intake tube is much larger than Z400 intake tube.
It is a tight fit but one you have the tube trimmed correctly you have a much cleaner intake setup.

We used stainless hose clamps on both sides of the tube to attach to Pingry airbox and Edelbrock carb.
Very Nice!

Summary

The Pingry / Twin Air 400EX combination gave us a much cleaner and larger intake for more flow through our new Edelbrock carb and Turdors Z450. After just completeing the Vegas to Reno race, nearly 500 off-road miles, we can report only one minor problem. During one of the air filter changes we evidently did not get the cage / t-bolt tightened all the way. This caused the filter and cage to vibrate loose during the next section of race course. We noticed this when the ATV started running poorly due to the change in air flow. After re-installing we had no more problems with this the rest of the race. The Pingy Pro Design Racing airbox looks perfect and we see no sign of cracking or any other possible failure. The new intake tube stayed in place perfectly. We are very happy with the upgrade to our Project LTZ-450.

I have a Stock 2004 Suzuki Z400 except for a K&N air filter (but no cover or clamp). I was wondering if it is possible to hook up the 400ex intake tube to a stock Z400 air filter box? please reply thank you!
