Heat is your enemy, and with Project 400EX's new Tudor's Performance 440 Kit, we wanted to make sure our air-cooled 440EX stays cool for many hours of riding. To do this, we contacted Mickey Dunlap at Four Stroke Tech and obtained a new Honda 400EX cool kit.

The new cool kit is designed to cool your oil temperature, and feed the cam and rocker arms with cooler oil. To install, you will need to drill and tap your clutch cover and head cover so the oil can be fed through the new Four Stroke Tech oil cooler and to your cam and rocker arms.

Installation

Here Tudor's Performance is tapping the head cover after drilling with a 11/32 drill bit. The tap is a 1/8" pipe thread tap. Do NOT run your tap all the way through or your fitting will not tighten up. You only need to tap it a little over half way.

This is our new Hinson Quick-change clutch cover tapped for the cool kit. The Hinson cover is a little different than the stock cover and thinner in this area. We tapped this one all the way through, then used a small plug on the bottom side. On the case side a small bearing is provided that needs to be JB Welded into the oil passageway.

This is the cooler used as part of the Four Stroke Tech cool kit. It looks to be a very high quality cooler and fit nicely between the frame tubes. You can mount anywhere if this location conflicts with your steering stabilizer or remote resevoirs, as the cooler does not need direct air flow for it to work. Run your hoses to either end of the cooler, fill the lines with some oil, and you are done.
