Installing HD GYT-R Performance Clutch

Source: ATV at Off-Road.com
With the performance upgrades in place Project Raptor is putting plenty of power to the ground. In fact so much that our stock clutch could not handle it. During our first real test, the SNARE Night Race, we started hearing loud screeching noises coming from Project Raptor. While we were not sure where the noise was coming from at first, we soon narrowed it down to the clutch. The clutch held up well enough to get us through the race but it needed to be replaced soon.

We went to Yamaha for some more GYT-R performance products. We obtained a GYT-R HD clutch kit, a GYT-R Billet clutch pressure plate, and a GYT-R billet clutch basket. The clutch kit is designed to with stand modified motors. The pressure plate and clutch basket are made for GYT-R by Hinson. These pieces are CNC machined from a solid piece of aircraft grade T-6 billet aluminum and then Akadized™ to give them a very hard wear-resistant surface. While we could have just replaced the clutch kit we have heard of a number of cases where the stock basket has broken. A broken basket could do additional damage to the case or drive gear. We opted for billet. The Billet basket also has larger holes for better lubrication and clutch plate life. With GYT-R parts in hand we headed to Sand Tech Racing in Las Vegas, Nevada. While this job could be accomplished by the mechanically inclined at home, we felt much more comfortable leaving this job to a professional.Tear Down The installation instructions that come with the GYT-R parts are very short. They basically refer you to the Yamaha service manual.

You will need to remove your belly skid plate and then drain the oil.
You need to also drain the coolant as the combined water pump oil pump will come off first.

With clutch cable disconnected, heel plate removed, brake pedal disconnected and lowered, you can remove the side cover.

It is a tight fit but the cover will now come off.
