Round 4, 2004 WORCS ATV RacingGoldendale, Washington

The 2004 ATV Racing season is well under way in most series and WORCS is no exception. We attended Round 4 at Goldendale, Washington. This was a new location for WORCS and one that we really enjoyed. (Of course being so close to our home office helped!) The Goldendale property is 320 acres located in the Klikatat valley on the Columbia River hills, just 6 miles south of Goldendale. When the sky was clear, we had spectacular views of Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, and Mt Raineer. Racers were welcomed into the small town of Goldendale and shuttles were provided from the track facility to town.
Scott Gilgovan from Reno, Nevada making his way up the hills. Scott finished 4th in the Masters 40+ class.

The track is a 6 1/4 mile Grand Prix layout with a 1 1/4 mile MX track incorporated within it. It's over 30 feet wide most of the way, so there is plenty of room to pass. Their were no big doubles or triples but plenty of places to get some air. Lots of natural elevation changes and plenty of places to use your brakes, along with the throttle.

Friday night brought wind and ample rain. The entire facility was slippery and sloppy on Saturday morning. The morning MX racers had lots of mud to deal with, but by afternoon when the ATV race started the track was mostly dry, with the exception of some low spots and corners that were still holding mud. Nearly perfect conditions with no dust.

Saturday's races are shorter, approximately 45 minutes, and most of the Pros run in the ATV Unclassified class so that they can get some practice in before Sunday. 65 ATV racers lined up in four rows. Each row started 30 seconds apart, with the ATV Unclassified in the back of the pack. Pro Josh Frederick quickly moved to the front and finished 1st overall by more than 30 seconds. With a front row start, Dirtwheels test rider Logan Holladay was very impressive and finished second overall . Logan was competing in the ATV Sport 16-29 class and was aboard a new TRX450R. The next three overall were local Northwest riders Grey Ferrando, Brandon Brown, and Mark Holz from Holz Racing products. Local riders commented that the track was the roughest they had ever seen. This was due to the large number of motorcycle riders on the course earlier in the day. Kirk Schreier from Phoenix Arizona finished 5th in the Vet 30+ A class and earned enough points to hold onto his lead in points. Lynn Prosser, also from Arizona, finished 4th in the ATV Sport 16-29 class and holds onto the points lead but she better watch out for Logan Holladay if he continues on his roll. Logan has finished first in the last two rounds. Jon Wayment from Roy Utah finished second in the ATV Master 40+ class and held onto the points lead there.

Pro rider Lance Hallsworth with the hole shot but Doug Eichner was not to leave him there for long.
In Production A it was a battle between Shawn Checketts on his Yamaha Raptor and Joshua Edwards on his new TRX450R
The Sunday ATV race is nearly twice as long and had 51 riders lined up on the starting line. Seven Pro Production riders and eight Pro (Open) riders were in the front row. Yamaha YFZ450's were EVERWHERE and are definately making a presence. A few TRX450R's were on the start line but it was clearly a Yamaha show. That said, two Hondas were up front with the hole shot. Lance Hallworth took the lead on his Honda with Doug Eichner right in his tracks on his Duncan TRX450R. From there on out it was an Eichner show the rest of the way. Doug dominated the race finishing 55 seconds in front of second place finisher Josh Frederick. This is the third round in a row that Doug Eichner has won and he definately had something figured out in Goldendale. Local racer Brandon Brown finished 3rd and then just off the podium was Jeffery Bocook from Puyallap Washington with a 4th overall and 2nd in ATV Pro. Young Production A racers Logan Holladay and Joshua Edwards both had impressive rides, finishing 1 & 2 in Production A and 8 - 10 Overall. Both were riding Honda TRX450R's. Starting in the back row Phil Dampier from Qual Valley, CA finished 1st in Production B riding his Yamaha. Only 10 seconds behind him was Josh Shields from Amity, Oregon on another Yamaha.
What a background for an ATV race! Mark Holz from Holz Racing finished 5th in Pro Production aboard is LTZ400.
16 year old Logan Holladay finished 1st in Production A and 8th overall aboard his TRX450R

Michael Cafro started making up alot of time his last couple laps but it was not soon enough. He finished 3rd in Pro Production aboard his Temecula Motorsports YFZ450.
Brandon Brown from Umatilla, Oregon finished 3rd overall and 1st in ATV Pro. Look for Brandon to be aboard a new TRX450R at Price.

Doug Eichner was a happy camper at the finish line after a flawless ride aboard his Duncan TRX450R
On the podium was Doug Eichner, Josh Frederick and Brandon Brown.

WORCS does a fabulous job at every race. We really like the transponder scoring system they are using this year. Most tracks allow MX practice on Friday so you can get significant track time in if you practice on Friday, race on Saturday, then race the long race on Sunday. If you live on the West Coast and have not been to a WORCS race yet, you are missing out.
