The Off-Road.com staff takes you behind the scenes and out onto the track, at Round #2 of the Pro Quad Championship series at Edison Field in Anaheim, CA. The SFX Formula USA crew had their work cut out for them, as the race was to coincide with the AMA amateur MX race and share the track designed for (and abused by) the EA Supercross race the night before. With over 1,400 amateur bikes turning out Sunday, the quads didn't enter the track for their first practice until after noon. By that time, the track was well packed, freshly watered, and very slick. The best battle in the Pro Quad final was where it should be, up front. Dana Creech and Tim Farr battled it out all the way through, until Farr checked up and then Creech checked out. What happened? Farr, last year's series champion, says, "I came out third there at the start, got by Jeremy Schell. Dana had gotten the lead by then. I put some pressure on him (Dana) at whatever spot I could get to him, just waited until I got close enough through the whoops. I reached down to grab a shift and caught my foot on the ground and ripped my foot underneath the bike." Creech confirms, "We (Creech and Farr) fought it out pretty good until he stalled it, nice little sandpit there and he kind of stopped." Creech was 5th overall last year, so he's looking to make a move up this season. After Anaheim's finish, he finds himself in second, only 2 points behind Farr. Kory Ellis, last year's runner up, finished 5th in Anaheim. That keeps him slightly behind Farr and Creech in points, but then it's a long way back to 4th overall. It will be a tight battle for the championship between these three. Jeremy Schell, racing on a Cannondale for the first time, used Sunday as seat time. "I'm really surprised, I've never rode this bike on a track like here, really nice. I've only rode the bike like three times, so it's really working good. I just need some more time on it, get my cornering down, speed back up. I haven't raced in two years." If this is the first time on the quad in competition, the other boys better keep an eye on the yellow and silver flash coming from the Cannondale camp! His third place finish moves Schell to 5th in the overall standings for the season. Las Vegas local Josh Frederick #7 is putting it all out there as well - Frederick finished 9th on Sunday, and sits comfortably in the top 10. He finished 7th last year, and with a lot of desert racing seat time since then, is looking to move up. With four races left to put in the books, he's knocking hard on riders ahead of him to do just that.
Creech sums it up for all - "It was a
great race in my book."
