• Getting Started There are no instructions for placement or alignment, so the first step is to layout the decals and make sure you have all the pieces in the right order. Having already spent time removing the old faded decals I was ready to proceed with installing the new Factory Effex kit. The first step was to clean the surfaces with rubbing alcohol to insure good adhesion of the vinyl. If you have been using Armor-All or a similar silicon product to keep your plastics shiny in the past, now is the time to make sure you really clean before applying the new graphics! Starting with the tank shroud, I applied the first piece of vinyl in what looked to be the right position. Easy enough and I figured this would be a quick project. Placing the next piece on I started to notice that this wasn't going to line up quite right. Luckily with the thick vinyl material and a little patience you are able to remove the graphics and reposition it. I found out it was much easier to get everything aligned with the help of a third hand. With the helper holding the other two pieces the placement was perfect and quickly the tank was done.
The front shroud on the Maier replacement plastics is a little different shape than the stock Yamaha unit so a little trimming of the vinyl was required. I chose to do this after installation with an X-acto knife.
• Seat cover kit The Factory Effex seat cover is a great improvement over the stock unit. A combination of a high traction material on the top with 30 mil vinyl on the sides makes for a durable cover that looks good and won't have your rear end sliding around uncontrollably. After riding with the gripping material I have gotten used to it and definitely prefer it over a stock setup. The first time I replaced a seat cover I used the do-it-yourself approach. After spending several DAYS trying to find the right size staples that would be large enough to hold while not piercing the plastic, stretching and fitting the cover, and being generally frustrated I decided on a much simpler approach. With the seat and new Factory Effex cover in hand I took a trip to the local auto upholstery shop. For under $15 and a half hour of time the new cover was installed perfectly!
