We tested the new Outlander 400, along with the 330, in the snow at one of the Bombardier test facilities in Quebec. The snow gave us a chance to test the Outlander under harsh and extreme conditions, testing the motor, CVT transmission, Visco-Lock Front differential, tires, and the comfort for the rider. The deep snow made for some tough riding, covering four hours of winding out the motor and beating the crap out of the suspension - the Outlander handled it without so much as a hiccup. Bombardier claims it has the fastest acceleration and top speed in its class (400-500cc); I can't verify that, but the 400cc motor revved out nice and smooth, and easily enough power to have fun.

Special Features

  • The TTI (Trailing Torsional Independent) Rear Suspension
  • A simple automotive style torsion bar offsets force from side to side to reduce "chassis roll" in rough terrain.
  • Fewer parts for less maintenance and repairs
  • SST Frame (Surrounding Spar technology)
  • Lighter and slimmer than standard frames
  • The continuous center spar along the bottom of the frame is fashioned after a ski, allowing slid and glide action for less chance of catching on an obstacle
  • Fewer weld points for greater strength

The Outlander 400 proved to be fun for trail riding, with its zippy motor and plush suspension. Like many other Bombardier models, it also has the earmarks of a good work quad - comfortable and tough, it would prove to be a strong friend for work around the house, farm or construction site. Just don't forget to take it out now and then and have a little fun! The model we tested proved Bombardier again as a company with a flair for design and attention to detail. Well built and reliable ATV's.
