S FOR SUPER: Polaris designed its 2009 RZR S to be more at home in the desert and the dunes.
Getting behind the wheel of the 2009 Polaris RZR S and railing through the desert, sailing over bumps and jumps, and pinballing
from corner to corner is an almost surreal experience. It's easy to pretend you're behind the wheel of a Trophy Truck racing
the likes of Robby Gordon or Riviera Racing. The difference is that the RZR S is mass produced and available to pretty much
anyone with $14k to spend or finance. Clearly that's a lot of money, but when you compare its capabilities to other off-road
vehicles, the RZR S is a comparatively inexpensive way to get the thrill of driving a car-like vehicle fast in the desert.
FROM WHENCE SHE CAME
When Polaris announced that a new long-travel version of its wildly successful RZR was forthcoming, it brought a smile to
the face of many a desert and dune enthusiast. The popularity of utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) for recreation cannot be
ignored. UTVs are one of the fastest growing trends the industry has ever seen, and Polaris has been quick to move and capitalize
on this new market, which has grown so quickly that even the manufacturers are a little shocked. The number of RZRs at any
off-road area in the country shows the popularity that Polaris is enjoying. The company has clearly created a product that
the consumer wants.
For 2009, Polaris has taken RZR concept one step further with the RZR S. The RZR S is a more specialized version of the standard
RZR that comes from the factory with long-travel suspension, more power, an upgraded rollcage, an aggressive wheel-and-tire
package and other premium features.
FLYING HIGH: Jumpers will dig the extra suspension travel and increased track width of the RZR S, which allows for plush landings
and excellent stability at speed.
The RZR S is really built for the dune and desert enthusiast and is more sport focused than the standard RZR, which features
an ATV trail-legal 50-inch track width. The RZR S features a wider 60-inch track width with longer A-arms and a sport-tuned
suspension. The added width brings with it a lot of benefits, especially when used in the desert and dunes, as it makes the
vehicle more stable and less prone to rollovers, and the added suspension travel offers a much plusher ride. If you want to
go hunting or tour through the mountains then the RZR S probably isn't the UTV for you, but if you want to fly through the
desert, the dunes or around MX tracks, the RZR is basically ready to go right from the dealership floor.
