Differential
lock is a unique feature of the front differential on Suzuki
4-wheel drive models. The differential lock can be used only in
the "super low" sub-transmission range whenever
maximum traction is needed. In standard 4WD, power is
transferred equally to the front wheels while they are pointed
straight ahead. However, when the front wheels are turned they
must rotate at different speeds requiring the differential to
alter the power transfer to each wheel. This is similar to a
rear differential of a car. This slightly reduces traction but
keeps steering effort to a minimum. In differential lock mode
however, power transfer to each front wheel is kept equal
regardless of the steering position. This provides maximum 4WD
traction but increases the steering effort slightly. This is why
this feature can be used only in the "super-low"
sub-transmission range.
