Kodiak 400 4x4 and 2WD - 2003 Yamaha ATV Lineup

Oct. 01, 2005 By ORC STAFF
When it debuted in 2000, the Kodiak 400 4x4 set the standard, impressing the heartiest enthusiast and earning ATV of the Year. In fact, the success of the Kodiak 400 led to the creation of its bigger brother, the Kodiak 450. Rolling off the assembly line in Newnan, Georgia, the Kodiak 400 4x4 and Kodiak 400 2WD are adapting well to the American lifestyle. All the densely wooded forests, mountainous terrain, farms and hunting make this bear feel right at home. Focusing on comfort and power for its riders, the Kodiak 400 4x4 is built to the highest performance standards.

The Kodiak 400 4x4 and 2WD's 401cc SOHC engines feature a compact, liquid-cooled 45-degree incline with a counterbalancer that provides all the power necessary for exploring and working. A Mikuni BSR33 carburetor fuels this bear with a quick throttle response down low and consistent power throughout the rev range.

The Kodiak 400 4x4 features the On-Command™ push-button 2WD/4WD, reverse and automatic transmission. This system allows riders to quickly adjust from 2WD for easy riding to 4WD for rougher terrain or conditions with ease by pushing a button near the right grip. Fore more easy riding, the Kodiak offers a forward-neutral-reverse shift lever that
keeps the throttle hand free while shifting and allowing riders to get out of tight spots with ease.

Yamaha's exclusive Ultramatic™ transmission is the world's first ATV transmission utilizing both a centrifugal clutch and a sprag (one-way) clutch behind the primary pulley.

The Kodiak 400 4x4 and 2WD provide not only superior engine braking and durability over other systems that do not provide constant belt tension, but this machine's engine braking prevents freewheeling when taking on the slopes with heavy loads or slowing before taking a corner.

The Kodiak 400 4x4 and 2WD are not only powerful bears but comfortable ones, as well. They combine light feeling and handling with plush suspension, offering more than 6.3 inches of travel up front and 7.1 inches of travel in the rear. Also, the quiet but nimble Kodiaks have a muffler designed specifically to offer the best power characteristics while keeping engine noise to a minimum.

Additional standard comfort and convenience features of these machines include the easy-access location of the choke lever near the left grip, a waterproof automotive-type DC outlet that can easily power a cell phone or Global Positioning System (GPS), an easy-access, no-tools air box, and over- and inner-fenders that help keep the rider dry when conditions get wet and sloppy. Full floorboards extend from the front to rear fender and a plush seat offers a more comfortable ride, while a four-gallon fuel tank means hours of exploring.

An under seat storage box is large enough to store trail necessities, such as a rope for pulling our competitors out of difficult situations. The trailer hitch is both center-mounted and detachable for easy towing up to 1,102 lbs. Finally, a speedometer with resettable tripmeter, indicator lights for 4WD and water temperature gauge allows the rider to keep track of engine maintenance intervals.

The durable Kodiak 400 4x4 and 2WD can make their way through the forest with 99 lbs. of goods on the front rack and 187 lbs. in the rear. These workhorses incorporate several other features that increase the machine's overall durability. The radiator's high positioning prevents damage from sticks, water and other elements, and the shaft drive system requires no maintenance.

A vent is also designed to keep debris from clogging the transmission, thereby extending belt life. Based on the success of Yamaha's Marine products, the Kodiak 400 4x4 and 2WD's electrical components are individually designed and integrated in a fuse box located under the seat for protection.

The Kodiak 400 2WD will be available in beige, red and hunter green in July 2002 for $4,599. The Kodiak 400 4x4 will be available in beige, red and hunter green at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $6,199 in June and Realtree™ Hardwoods Hunter Edition for $6,499 in June.
