Cat’s ATV Line-Up:

Jun. 07, 2006 By Raymond (Hawkeye) Sedorchuk

Arctic Cat is one of two ATVs companies founded in the good old USA, the other is Polaris Industries. Arctic Cat company headquarters are based out of Thief River Falls, MN. Cat has been producing Snowmobiles and ATVs for over 40 years with a dealer network throughout all of the United States, Canada and Europe.

This year Arctic Cat has implemented a few changes to their line of ATVs such changes include newly designed tires, handlebars, suspension tuning, and the introduction of a new 700 EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) powered 4x4 utility unit. Along with the new model and unit changes, they have now introduced a tillage and planting line of ATV tools called the Speedpoint System. Let’s work our way down the Cat line first starting with their largest unit the Prowler and work our way throughout the 9 classes of models.

Cat’s ATV Line-Up:
Prowler’s Side By Side Action:

The simplest way to explain the Arctic Cat line of ATVs is to first state that all of the larger ATVs come in two versions, the standard model and the complete package which is usually an up-grade consisting of a winch, fancy wheels, digital display cluster, and a sway-bar.

The Prowler is Arctic Cat’s side by side cargo-box unit. They like to call it a sport utility model, if so it’s not the economy version. The Prowler is big, not super-sized but big, larger than any of the standard side by side units on the market, measuring in at 115 inches by 61.3 inches. The unit uses a 641cc, 4-stroke, water cooled, single cylinder engine. Putting the power to the wheels is an automatic CVT transmission with high, low, neutral, and reverse. As stated the unit is large and the suspension seems stiff by many standards but I liked the overall stance and ride of the Prowler. The unit uses a fully independent suspension front and rear with double A-arm design, the suspension is supplied with 10 inches of travel and 12.5 inches of ground clearance, plus push button 4-wheel drive with diff-lock. By any means this machine sits high, the vehicle is a step up into the driver’s seat but the overall feel is strong. Yes, this means the unit will have a higher center of gravity than most side by side cargo units but personally I liked the stiff but agile ride that the unit emits. Control is adequate and the off-road capabilities are highlighted by the combination of a powerful engine, good shifting, and a moderately comfortable ride. I don’t like sissy vehicles and the Prowler is no sissy. Actually it’s my favorite Arctic Cat ATV, the unit is jam-packed with extras. Large comfortable seats, two 12volt accessories outlets, under hood storage/doubling as a cooler, glove box, and drink holder. Now the Prowler comes in a decked out package known as the XT version this unit is equipped with rear sway bar, Cast aluminum 14” wheels, and digital gauge cluster. The standard Prowler rolls on steel wheels and lacks the sway-bar and digital gauge package. Standard or XT the Prowler is a top notch side by side with a cargo box that can handle 600lbs of whatever and the unit is rated for 1500lbs of towing capacity. Again the engine is a 641cc, liquid cooled, 4-stroke powerplant that uses a 36mm Keihin carburetor, this is the only engine that Cat makes in their own facility. Braking the Prowler is done by front and rear disc brakes, the unit is supplied with a foot operated parking brake.

Let’s sum the Prowler up with my likes and dislikes, first off, the off-road capability is quite good with powerful acceleration in almost any condition. Next the driver’s area is comfortable, plenty of room and large comfortable seating. The overall stance is wide meaning the machine is functional as well as adding to its attractive look. Now for my dislikes, yes, the driver’s area is comfortable but a few improvements need to be made. The seats are large but that comfort comes at a price, the arm rest protection on both outer sides of the vehicle is quite long. The length is only a problem on the drivers side where getting into the vehicle is hampered by the steering wheel and the combination arm rest, side protection. This leads to the next problem, the steering wheel is smaller than we would expect, most likely because more space was needed for entering and exiting.

When talking with the Arctic Cat engineers they stated that I should stand first and then exit the vehicle but my problem with that is. Most consumers who would purchase a Prowler would be mature, as older individuals it would be harder to step down or jump down while exiting the Prowler. Remember this is a unit with 12.5 inches of ground clearance and 26 inch tall tires, the step down is significant. Lastly, I did not like the parking brake, this item is hard to operate and is tricky on release. Several times the parking brake warning light would be on after disengaging the brake, the fix was to pick up on the parking brake pedal.

2007Arctic Cat 700 EFI, 4x4 Automatic LE

Arctic Cat’s newest machine is the new 700 EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) LE or Limited Edition model. Actually there is a 700 EFI 4x4 Automatic with out the LE package, the unit hit the show room floors back in March 2006 and the standard model lacks such features as the digital display, winch, large front and rear protective bumpers, CV joint protection, aluminum wheels, and sway-bar mounted in the rear as a suspension up-grade. The LE version is only offered in Sunset Orange as the standard version is available in red, dark green, and lime green.

The new 700 is powered by a 695cc, EFI, DOHC, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, this engine is directly taken from Suzuki’s Kingquad.

The machine offers all the Arctic Cat features riders are used to, including the SpeedRack system which offers dozens of accessories and accessory packages. The engine is linked to a great CVT automatic transmission with high and low ranges and the unit is equipped with push button on the fly 4-wheeldrive with front differential lock and all wheel hydraulic disk brakes. Other features include a 2inch standard receiver hitch front and rear of the ATV, 6.5 gallon fuel tank, fully independent suspension, rear independent suspension with front double A-arms, preload adjustable shocks, 12 inches of ground clearance and 10 inches of suspension travel.

The LE features include a digital display with 14 functions including, clock/hour meter, fuel level, mode button, odometer/trip, gear position, speedometer/tachometer, differential lock, drive selection, high beam, temperature, oil pressure and analog speedometer readout. Most of this years Arctic Cat ATVs will see new Goodyear Rawhide RS tires (25x8-12 front, 25x10-12 rear), new and improved handlebars and side engine covers to keep heat off of the rider’s legs

The 700 EFI unit is responsive and smooth, good trail machine with plenty of ground clearance. Cornering was difficult at higher speeds or at least it took some getting used to, mostly because of the high center of gravity. When the rider demands maxim suspension travel and ground-clearance, they must be willing to lose some off-handling occurrences.

Arctic Cat 650 H1 4x4 Automatic LE

Now this unit or should I say engine has been around for over a year now, this is Arctic Cat’s first in house engine build. Arctic Cat produces this single cylinder, liquid-cooled, 641cc, four-stroke engine in their state of the art engine building facility. The single cylinder should not be confused with their past V-twin model. This model is know as the H1 650 4x4 automatic LE or Cat also offers a standard version. The standard model lacks such features as the digital display, winch, large front and rear protective bumpers, CV joint protection, aluminum wheels, and sway-bar mounted in the rear as a suspension up-grade. The LE version is only offered in dark green as the standard version is available in black, dark green, max 4 camo, and lime green.

The 650 is powered by a single cylinder, liquid-cooled, 641cc, four-stroke, liquid-cooled engine but that’s not all Cat offers all the features loyal Arctic Cat riders are used to, including the SpeedRack system which offers dozens of accessories and accessory packages.

The 650 unit is responsive and a good trail machine with plenty of ground clearance. Again cornering was difficult at higher speeds or at least it took some getting used to, mostly because of the high center of gravity. When the rider demands maxim suspension travel and ground-clearance some trail operations will need more attention.

2007 Arctic Cat 500 4x4 Auto and Manual shift

The 500cc class of ATVs has always been a favorite for getting the job done and the Arctic Cat 500 ATV is well suited. Let’s start by explaining that this unit as with all the Cat’s have a great “Cat-Eye” headlight look that goes well with the stylish body plastic. Arctic Cat sure is on top of the game with long, wide fenders, and great colors but there is more than good looks behind each machine. The 500 model is powered by a 493cc, 4-stroke, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine and putting that power to the wheels is two transmission choices.

First the Duramatic Automatic Transmission with an engine braking system (EBS) or a five-speed auto-clutch manual transmission with Hi-Lo range. Just like the 650 4x4 models, the 500 4x4 lineup comes standard with fully independent front and rear suspension. Ten inches of suspension travel and 12 inches of ground clearance provide a comfortable ride over trail obstacles and deep ruts. When it comes to traversing uneven terrain, Arctic Cat’s suspension systems work well in even the worst trail conditions.

There are a few new features, new style handlebars, bodyplastic/engine covers, and suspension up-grades. Other 500cc 4x4 features include push-button select 2WD / 4WD modes, full-lock front differential, new digital instrument pod with 14 operation / warning indicators, large-capacity SpeedRacks, floating hydraulic disc brakes, five-position front and rear adjustable shocks, Goodyear Rawhide RS tires (25x8-12 front, 25x10-12 rear), two-inch automotive-style receiver hitch. Available colors are red, dark green, lime green.

2007 Arctic Cat 400 4x4 Auto, Manual and Auto LE

There are plenty of new features and changes when it comes to the 2007 Arctic Cat 400’s. Now each 400 model comes equipped with slimline SpeedRacks, featuring a contoured shape and accessory attachment mounts that lower the height of the rack. (In other words, the open channel input is welded on to the racks below the rack) The 400’s also receive a full-lock front differential, floating brake calipers, a redesigned hydraulic foot brake system with remote reservoir and heavy-duty rear axle. As with the rest of the line now the 400’s have the 14 function digital display gauge system.

Powering the 400 4x4 is a 376cc, air/oil-cooled, four-stroke engine featuring a temperature controlled fan and an automatic choke for simple starting. The 400cc engine is matted to either an automatic CVT transmission or a manual 5-speed gear-box with high and low range, the choice is that of the rider. Both 400 class ATVs feature a fully independent, front suspension and a great rear suspension as well and is supplied with fully adjustable preload shocks. Additional interest includes a 2 inch hitch receiver, push button 4-wheeldrive, Goodyear Rawhide RS tires (25x8-12 front, 25x10-12 rear), 12 inches of ground clearance and 10 inches of suspension travel, large 6.5 gallon fuel tank, and 100lb front rack capacity and 200lb rear rack capacity. Remember this unit is also offered with the LE package so items such as aluminum wheels, 14 function digital display, front brush guard, rear bumper and Warn winch are all part of the package. Although the unit does not come standard with a rear sway-bar Arctic Cat does offer this as an option. The 400 models are fun and have all the power and traction needed to do any work or have fun in the field. Look at these units for a great mid-range ATV.

2007Arctic Cat 250 Automatic

Smaller ATV units have somehow become known for younger or less experienced riders, maybe we need to re-think that logic and remember back a few years ago, when a 350cc machine was the largest engine size available. In recent years most riders were satisfied with power levels from 200cc, 300cc, and 350cc machines.

Somewhere along the trail we have lost track of those small-bore days, twin cylinders and large diameter piston sizes have dulled our senses.
Arctic Cat offers their version of an economical and versatile 250cc ATV, the unit is a 249cc SOHC 4-stroke, single cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. Mated to the power plant is a fully automatic CVT transmission, featuring a Hi and Lo forward gearing and reverse. This model is a two-wheel drive machine with full racks and instrumentation. Suspension includes double A-arm front and a mono-shock rear, look for a shaft drive with disc braking front and rear.

Another option is the same machine only with a different look. The 250 is offered in a sport version, with looks similar to the DVX 400 model. This model is know as the DVX 250 and only changes include tires, weight, and body plastic to complete the transformation.

DVX 400

The Sporty side of Arctic Cat is simple, a good looking, fast, 400cc, machine with optimal handling and control. Here we have a 398cc liquid- cooled, four-stroke, single cylinder engine bolted to a five speed manual transmission with reverse. Both work well and produce clean, well balance performance. The engine uses a counter balancer for a smooth feel and dry-sump lubrication for a lower center of gravity, feeding the fuel air mixture is a Mikuni 37mm carburetor.
As a sport machine the suspension is designed for performance, up front you’ll find a double A-arm suspension with 8.5 inches of travel and great completely adjustable standard issue shocks with piggyback reservoirs. In the rear we have a swingarm/linkage-type suspension with 9.1 inches of travel and with an equally adjustable rear shock. This model drives and feels like part of the rider, stability and control are set as a standard. Braking is done with the same efficiency and control due to large hydraulic disc brakes throughout. Perhaps another feature that adds to the control and feel may be the 10x5.5 front and 9x8 rear radial tires with aluminum rims, we find that radial tires add to a level of performance. Riders will notice a thin seating area and frame with a stylish body that features removable front fenders. Although this model is popular with other ATV manufactures it will always be one of our favorites. Colors include a red/black combination, red on red and black on lime green, lastly the DVX 400 comes in an LE version with the TS orange for color.

Arctic Cat TBX

Some of us work hard but don’t need an ATV the size of a side by side cargo ATV, well Arctic Cat offers a unit known as the TBX which rides like a regular ATV but works like a small pick-up truck. Powered by the Arctic Cat made 650 H1 this unit features 4 wheel-drive, a great ride and the ability to do plenty of work. The 650 H1 is a four-stroke, four valve, liquid cooled powerplant, and transferring power to the wheels is done by a Duramatic automatic transmission with hi and low forward ranges along with reverse. Don’t think the TBX is a pushover, you’ll find all the big machine features in this work/play unit, such as push button in and out 4 wheel-drive, front differential lock, and full under belly protection. As a workhorse the unit has several integrated features to help when things get serious. First a rear cargo dump-box with a 1,050lb towing capacity, 300lb carrying capacity, 100lb front rack capacity, front rack speedrack integration, 2 inch automotive style receiver hitch, and two side storage compartments. Remember, all the new features for this year are found on the TBX unit, the digital instrument display, the new style Goodyear Rawhide RS tires, more comfortable handlebars, and the side engine covers. Lastly the unit fallows suit with fully adjustable shocks and 10 inches of suspension travel with 12 inches of ground clearance. TBX colors include red and dark green.

2007 Arctic Cat TRV Line

The two-up concept is only a few years in existence, the basic concept revolves around taking a single seat ATV and stretching the frame and machine a few inches giving the ability to ad an extra seat for a passenger. Only now Arctic Cat has taken the two-up concept even a bit further with the options of removing the seat and adding either a dump cargo box or the Speedrack platform capability.

The TRV line-up is quite versatile with two engine size choices and the option of buying the LE edition (Limited Edition). Arctic Cat likes to call this unit the 3-in-1 ATV, just think, you can ride tandem, or remove the seat and replace it with either a SpeedRack or TBX-style cargo box. The TRV is standard with double seating. The two other options must be bought separately from an authorized Arctic Cat dealer. Power levels and price are always an issue and maybe that’s why Cat has produced the TRV with a 400cc model and the 650 H1 model. Both models are outfitted with in and out 4 wheel-drive, Electronic choke, start in gear feature and single lever hand operated hydrologic disc brakes.
The 400cc model is an air/oil cooled, four-stroke, engine. Now the 650 H1 is a four-stroke, four valve, liquid cooled powerplant, and transferring power to the wheels of both models is done by a Duramatic automatic transmission with hi and low forward ranges along with reverse. A big change for this year is the TRV gearing, this year they reduced the gearing to 4.0 in the front and rear differentials to give more low end power. Don’t think the TRV is a pushover, you’ll find all the big machine features in this work/play unit, such as push button in and out 4 wheel-drive, and full under belly protection. As a workhorse the unit has several integrated features to help when things get serious.
The TRV comes standard with fully independent front and rear suspension. You’ll find 8 inches of suspension travel throughout and 10 inches of ground clearance. The unit does not come with a sway-bar, Cat feels the lack of a sway-bar will provide a comfortable ride over trail obstacles and deep ruts and increase wheel contact to the trail. Although as an option, you can purchase the sway-bar as an add-on. When it comes to traversing uneven terrain, Arctic Cat’s suspension systems work well, even in the worst trail conditions.

There are a few new features, new style handlebars, bodyplastic/engine covers, and suspension up-grades. Other TRV features include push-button select 2WD / 4WD and Differential lock (only on the 650 H1), new digital instrument pod with 14 operation/warning indicators, large-capacity SpeedRacks, floating hydraulic disc brakes, five-position front and rear adjustable shocks, Goodyear Rawhide RS tires (25x8-12 front, 25x10-12 rear), two-inch automotive-style receiver hitch. Available colors are as follows, the 400 4x4 TRV automatic and the 650 H1 4x4 TRV automatic come in red, dark green, and lime green, now the 650 H1, 4x4 TRV automatic LE edition is only available Black.
