Rob MacCachren Wins 48th SCORE Baja 1000

Rob MacCachren and Andy McMillin teamed up last year to win the Baja 1000, and the two joined forces again to defend the title and earn another victory in one of the most challenging off-road races in the world.

“Winning the Bud Light SCORE Baja 1000 is like no other feeling in the world,” MacCachren said. “When you win this race you know that you've accomplished something. We've got a very powerful team between the two of us and we both know how to win the race and the guys who work on the truck do what it takes.”

MacCachren and McMillin were actually one teammate short of last year’s winning team, as MacCachren waited until the race mileage for this year’s course (pegged at 821.38 miles) was officially announced to reach out to Jason Voss again for this year’s race. But before he could do so, Luke McMillin tabbed Voss as his driving partner. MacCachren felt confident in he and teammate Andy McMillin’s chances in the No. 11 Ford F-150 truck, as both racers know the challenges that Baja will present over the course of the race.

What made this victory so interesting is the fact that the No. 11 Trophy Truck was actually the second vehicle to cross the finish line in Ensenada. Carlos Apdaly Lopez was the first across the finish line, but shortly thereafter SCORE announced at least 20 minutes in penalties for Lopez. It appeared as though MacCachren and McMillin would earn the overall win, which official review did in fact confirm.

Not knowing of the potential penalties, McMillin drove the final leg back into Ensenada in the night trying his best to track down Lopez.

“In the last 200 miles I knew we had to pass Apdaly to win and put some time on him as well,” McMillin said. “I was pushing really hard and the truck gave more than I really could ask from it. I was giving it my all with every gear hitting the rev limiter and really driving as hard as I could.”

In the end, the final time for MacCachren and McMillin was just under 16 hours at 15:58:32 (with an average speed of 51.41), while Lopez’ final time after penalties was 16:14:55.

Finishing in third place was Eduardo Laguna, who was also in the hunt for the Trophy Truck Championship along with MaCachren, Lopez and Gustavo Vildosola Jr. Laguna, who partnered with Josh Daniel for this year’s race, noted just how rough this year’s course was.

“The silt beds were bad and the dust was hanging right above the hood and it was hard for us to see,” he said. “We had to baby sit it and feel our way through.”

The overall Trophy Truck Champion has not yet been announced, as SCORE still has to review the point standings after the conclusion of the Baja 1000. Stay tuned for an update on all the class champions later this week.

In Class 1, the team of Jon Walker and Corey Keysar earned the victory in class aboard their Chevy-powered Kreger buggy with an overall time of 18 hours, 49 minutes, and 24 seconds, with an average speed of 43.64 mph. Walker noted just how tough this course is and how they faced challenges very early on in the race.

“There was a lot of beating and banging off the start for about 150 miles,” Walker said. “We were by ourselves a little bit and went right through the silt beds and passed a couple of stuck SCORE Trophy Trucks. A lot of work goes into this race and this was the payday.”

Keysar, who drove the final leg of the race, said that consistency was the key to the victory.

“We got into the car in a great position and we just kept working on it and eventually got into the lead,” he said. “We just kept working on the lead by staying consistent.”

In Class 10, the Chevy-powered No. 1069 custom buggy of Cody Reid, Mike Majesky and Louis Chamberland earned the victory after overcoming some early mechanical issues and mistakes.

“Louis had some injector issues and we got that swapped out and going again,” Reid said. “Then it happened again when I got in the car. Once we got that fixed we chased back down the car in front of us and here we sit.”

The Class 19 UTV division, Terry Hui and Wayne Matlock earned the victory aboard their Polaris RZR XP4 1000 with an overall time of 22 hours even.

“We had a little bit of a visibility issue along the coast right before dark but everything went good and thank you to SCORE for organizing such a great race,” Hui said. “I am a beginner and this is the second time I've entered a race, and without the side-by-side industry I wouldn't be in the race.”

In Class 4400, Shannon Campbell and son Wayland drove their Ultra4 race car to the finish line. Wayland, who will look to follow in the footsteps of his rock-race legend father Shannon, spoke about the course and the team’s race at the finish line.

“The race was awesome,” Campbell said. “I’ve never been on a course like this and the terrain changes so much. It was awesome to be down here to experience all of this. I've never experienced whoops like San Felipe before and it was incredible. I'm going to have to go find a new kidney. I loved doing it and this was the first time I've had a driver change with my dad.”

Leading up to the race, Honda made big news by announcing its re-entry in the Baja 1000 race with a truck - one that featured body styling that previews the upcoming 2017 Ridgeline. The team of Jeff Proctor, Jason LaFortune and Honda’s Sage Marie were happy to make the finish line after all of the preparation and work on the turbo-charged racetrack.

“We brought a unique engine package to this race,” Proctor said. “It is a 3.5 liter twin-turbo motor and it didn't skip a beat all day long. No flat tires or any mechanical issues at all. We had a little bit of an issue in the silt early in the day but we got through it. We are stoked to be here.”

Earning the race win and taking the No. 1 plate at the same time was the Honda CRF450X of Colton Udall, Mark Samuels and Justin Jones. The team is in its second year of racing the SCORE series without the support of the Honda race team after Johnny Campbell racing pulled out two years ago. The team finished the race with a time of 16 hours, 29 minutes and 8 seconds, with an average speed of 49.82 mph.

Udall explained that the team’s hard work over the past two years was finally realized with the overall victory and class championship for 2015.

“Taking back the 1x is a lot of hard work and our team has been working super hard all year to get this done, so it feels amazing to be here at the finish line with a giant time gap,” Udall said.

In the Pro ATV class, Javier Robles Jr. and co-rider Josh Row earned the victory with a time of 19 hours, 2 minutes and 3 seconds. Row said the team had a great race overall, and in spite of the challenging course the team had no major issues.

“It was really rough and rocky with different terrain but we had a flawless day and zero issues with the bike which is exactly what we wanted,” he said. “We wanted a smooth race and to get to the finish first and we were able to do that. The silt was challenging because it changed after days of trucks pre-running.”

SCORE will return to action next year with the San Felipe 250 from February 25-28. For more information, visit http://www.score-international.com/
