Robby Gordon Leads SCORE Baja 500 Trophy Truck Qualifying

Qualifying for this weekend’s SCORE Baja 500 was held today on a small, 5-mile course south of Ensenada. Off-road veteran Robby Gordon posted the fastest time today, besting second-place finisher Bryce Menzies by more the 5 seconds. The time will give Gordon the pole position when the Trophy Trucks leave the starting line on Saturday morning in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, for the 48th running of the Baja 500.

Finishing third behind Menzies is last year’s Baja 500 winner Carlos Lopez, with Rob MacCachren and Justin Matney finishing in fourth and fifth, respectively. The McMillin clan were the next two fastest qualifiers in the class, with Luke McMillin edging out older cousin Andy McMillin with the sixth fastest time. Jason McNeil will come off the line eighth on Saturday morning, and Kyle Jergensen finished with the ninth quickest time. Rounding out the top 10 qualifiers in Trophy Truck was Dan McMillin.

Nine Class 1 racers took on the qualifying course for this year’s race, with Cody Parkhouse posting the quickest time ahead of Justin Davis and Jamie Huerta Jr., who finished in second and third, respectively. Finishing fourth in class was Paul Keller, while Shelby Reid rounded out the top five.

Tomorrow SCORE will hold technical inspections and contingency in Ensenada throughout the day. Racing will begin early Saturday morning on the 477.52-mile race course that will leave from the starting line in Ensenada, loop around the northern portion of the Baja peninsula and return to the finish line back in Ensenada. SCORE has reported that more than 250 race teams have entered the race from 22 U.S. States and 10 different countries. Motorcycles will kick off the action at 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning, with Trophy Trucks leading the four-wheel racers (trucks, open-wheel buggies and UTVs) off the line at 10 a.m. Check back with Off-Road.com for more coverage of this weekend’s race.
